The Real Reason to Fire McChrystal

It's judgment day for General Stanley McChrystal: The commander in Afghanistan is set to meet with President Obama today to learn his fate after his disastrous decision to grant Rolling Stone a candid interview. McChrystal has reportedly offered his resignation, but Obama is keeping his cards close, saying on Tuesday night that, while McChrystal "showed poor judgment," he wants "to talk to him directly before I make any final decisions." The Daily Beast's Peter Beinart says the press is turning a story about policy into a story about penises: What matters isn't what McChrystal said about Obama—it's that the general's position on the war could wreck his presidency. Plus, James Carroll, Leslie H. Gelb, Meghan McCain, and more Daily Beast contributors weigh in on whether Obama should accept McChrystal's offer.
